BAUM conference as a sustainable event

The BAUM conference and award ceremony will be carried out in the most resource-saving and climate-conscious way possible, taking sustainability aspects into account.

BAUM is essentially guided by the requirements of the Federal Environment Agency and its guidelines for the sustainable organisation of events.

Analysis using material flow balance

2025, the corporate network analyzed the use and consumption of materials and energy for the first time using a material flow balance. It was supported by 2bdifferent and Trash Galore. “The analysis helps us to move from perceived to knowledge-based sustainability. As a result, we are deepening our cooperation with the two BAUM members and further qualifying our event management as part of the Sustainable Event Management Initiative (INV),” says BAUM chairwoman Yvonne Zwick.

You can find the results here.
BAUM members, implementation partners of the BAUM 2025 and 2026 conferences and members of the Sustainable Event Industry Initiative can find out more details at a webinar on material flow analysis (April 30, 11:00-12:30).

Life cycle assessment of aluminum cans for beverages

Here we analyze the current status of the life cycle assessment of aluminum cans for beverages, taking into account production, transport, recycling and systemic factors. The analysis is based on official sources such as the Federal Environment Agency, the Wuppertal Institute and other reputable studies. In addition, specific information from Semper Idem Underberg is integrated.

Sustainable event management at our conference and award ceremony covers a total of six areas.

Venue and mobility

  • Good accessibility of the venue by public transportation
  • Informing participants about the most environmentally friendly and CO₂-free journey
  • Offer of discounted Deutsche Bahn event tickets (100 percent green electricity)
  • Tips for climate-friendly travel by bike and carpooling
  • Barrier-free access to the conference rooms
  • Late program start and early end times allow travel by Deutsche Bahn (from most cities) on the same day. This avoids additional overnight stays and flying.

Procurement of products and services

  • Cooperation with partners from the region to minimize transport routes and reduce CO₂-footprint in the provision of services
  • No production of decoration materials; decoration materials are rented as required
  • All required materials are printed on 100% recycled paper with the Blue Angel label; the necessity of the materials to be printed is carefully checked
  • Extensive reusability of advertising materials such as BAUM exhibition stand, roll-ups, displays and flags
  • Digital offerings such as event website and event app

Catering

  • Use of seasonal products from regional and preferably organic cultivation as well as fair trade products
  • Selection of vegetarian dishes from a nutritional point of view, some vegan
  • Provision of tap water (if possible)
  • Use of reusable crockery, cutlery and glasses
  • Avoiding small portion and packaging units and disposable packaging
  • Careful planning to avoid food waste

Climate and resource protection

  • Paperless online registration
  • Take-back system for name badges and their recycling
  • Partial offer of hybrid event formats
  • Provision of waste separation systems on site (where possible)
  • Sustainability requirements for stand areas and give-aways
  • Raising awareness among service partners with regard to climate and resource protection (e.g. room temperature, low water consumption and environmentally friendly cleaning agents)
  • Transparent recording of all emissions (including travel, accommodation, catering, use of materials and event location)
  • Ongoing reduction of event-related greenhouse gas emissions
  • Targeted support for selected, certified climate protection projects as a contribution to the restoration of nature

Overnight stay of the participants

  • Selection of hotel partners with proven sustainable corporate strategies or proximity to the conference venue

Communication

  • Communication of sustainable measures via our website, also as an inspiration to imitate
  • Consideration of the principles of gender mainstreaming
